What is Bariatric Surgery?

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, is a surgical procedure designed to help individuals with obesity achieve significant and sustained weight loss while also improving their overall health and quality of life.

Today, most, if not all, bariatric surgery is performed via small incisions or laparoscopically, and most patients go home the same day.

In Canada, candidates for bariatric surgery typically include individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher or a BMI of 35 or higher with obesity-related health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea.

While it was once believed that bariatric surgery was solely involved in changing the digestive system to limit the amount of food that can be consumed or absorbed, we now understand it’s much more impactful. These procedures alter key brain functions that govern our appetite and metabolism.

Changing the biological drivers that affect hunger (including GLP-1, ghrelin and leptin) and their impact on the brain has been shown to lead to many more beneficial changes in the body. These changes lead to better sugar control, lower fat deposits in blood vessels and, of course, weight loss.

Types of bariatric surgeries offered in Canada include:

- Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery.
- Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery.
- Mini-Bypass surgery.
- Single/Double Duodenal Switch Surgery.

Bariatric surgery is a safe pillar of therapy that can offer, on average, 50-60% of excess weight loss within 1-2 years and the resolution of many weight-related health conditions, including diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. In addition, it can lower your risk of death, cancer and heart disease.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, known commonly as gastric sleeve surgery, is the most common type of bariatric surgery due to its relative simplicity. Gastric sleeve surgeries are the most common surgery at our bariatric clinic.

During gastric sleeve surgery, a surgeon removes roughly 80% of the stomach, including the area of the stomach that produces the hunger hormone ghrelin. As a result, the stomach becomes much smaller and shaped like a banana.

Due to its reduction in size, the stomach can no longer hold as much food, and the patient experiences less hunger. Gastric sleeve surgery ultimately leads to fewer calories and an improved metabolism, which in turn leads to weight loss.

What to Expect During Surgery

On the day of surgery, you will arrive an hour prior to your appointment and be seen by our pre-operative nurse and anesthesiologist, who will review your health information.

You will then meet your team of surgeons, who will answer any additional questions about your surgery prior to starting. Then, you will change into your surgical robe and be escorted to your private surgical suite.

After your 30-45 minute surgery is completed, you will awake from anesthesia in the operating room and then be transferred to the recovery room.

For 2-4 hours, you will remain under the care and supervision of our recovery nurse, our anesthesiologist and our surgical team. We will work to treat your pain and nausea and keep these both to a minimum.

Once you feel comfortable and can walk and drink with ease, you will be given a prescription for pain and nausea medications. A family and/or friend can then be called to pick you up.

In the following days, our surgeons and nurses will call you at home and check to make sure you are on your path to swift recovery.
