What is Weight Loss Surgery?

Weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, is a surgical procedure designed to help individuals with obesity achieve significant and sustained weight loss while also improving their overall health and quality of life.

At our weight loss clinic in Burlington and Toronto, our weight loss surgeries are almost all done via small incisions or laparoscopically, allowing most patients to go home the same day.

Weight loss surgeries change the biological drivers that affect hunger (including GLP-1, ghrelin and leptin). Their impact on the brain has been shown to lead to many more beneficial changes in the body. These changes lead to better sugar control, lower fat deposits in blood vessels and, of course, weight loss.

Weight loss surgeries are very safe procedures that offer an average of 50-60% excess weight loss within 1-2 years. They also help resolve many weight-related health conditions, like high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol.

At MyLife Bariatrics, we work with HOW Clinics to leverage a range of treatments into a holistic, long-term plan for sustained weight loss.

How to Qualify for Weight Loss Surgery

At our weight loss clinic in Burlington and Toronto, surgery eligibility is based on body mass index (BMI). Your BMI measures body fat and is a good gauge of risk for body fat-related diseases.

To be a candidate for bariatric surgery, you must:

  • Have a BMI greater than 40
  • Have a BMI of 35 or more in addition to an obesity-related condition like heart disease or type 2 diabetes
  • Have a BMI of 30 or more with type 2 diabetes that is not well-managed

Gastric sleeve surgery is generally our most recommended procedure for most patients due to its relative simplicity and fast recovery time.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Gastric sleeve surgery, or laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, is the most common type of bariatric surgery due to its simplicity and safety. Gastric sleeve surgeries are the most common surgery at our weight loss clinic in Burlington.

Gastric sleeve surgery involves a surgeon removing approximately 80% of the stomach, including the area of the stomach that produces ghrelin, the hunger hormone. As a result, the stomach shrinks and becomes banana-shaped.

Due to its size reduction, the stomach can no longer hold as much food, and the patient experiences less hunger. Gastric sleeve surgery ultimately leads to fewer calories and an improved metabolism, leading to weight loss.

What to Expect During Surgery

On the day of your surgery, we will request that you arrive one hour before your appointment. You will be seen by our anesthesiologist and pre-operative nurse, who will review your health information.

Then, you will meet your team of surgeons. They will take the time to answer any last-minute questions before starting surgery. You will then change into your surgical robe and be escorted to your private surgical suite.

Following your surgery, which typically lasts 30-45 minutes, you will be transferred to the recovery room, where you will remain for 2-4 hours under the supervision of our recovery nurse, surgical team, and anesthesiologist. We will keep you comfortable, treating any pain and nausea you may experience.

Once you feel comfortable and can walk and drink with ease, you will be given a prescription for pain and nausea medications. A family member or friend can then be called to pick you up.In the following days, our surgeons and nurses will call you at home and check to make sure you are on your path to swift recovery.
